Lake Toho-BASS January 24-30

1-24-05 Day 1 Practice- I had one fish today, it went about 3 pounds.  I spent the entire day flippin Lake Toho.  There is some good shore line stuff, that looks like it should have fish in it.  I have a feeling that the bite I got was just some resident fish, I wasn't able to duplicate what I was doing.  I really feel that I should have caught more.

Tomorrow I am going to try some different things, there is a lot of off shore hydrilla that the bass must be holding in, there just isn't anything else in this lake.  It is a natural, bowl shaped lake with grass in the middle.  If they aren't on the bank, then they should be in the grass off shore.  The grass could also be where they stage.

Tomorrow, I am going to slow down and fish a carolina rig in the off shore grass, and I will also slow roll a spinner bait.  I did notice a lot of bird activity in a couple of areas, which leads me to suspect that there might be some bait fish.  I want to make sure that I check this because this could be an important factor.

We are expecting a warming trend, which could trigger a fish movement.  Places where I thought they would be today in shallow water could hold fish later in the week.

1-25-05 Day 2 Practice - I had a better day today, it started out kind of slow but got better as the day went on, possibly because of the warming trend.  I had six bites today that I pulled on, did not set the hook, two of the bites held on to the surface, one was about 4 and the other about 6.

Today I focused on drains, guts and ditches, and I liked what I saw.  There isn't a lot of structure here, so any little ditch or place where rain run-off might come into the lake could provide a subtle difference.  I did some finesse fishing today, but I also had that flippin stick in my hand an awful lot.  I am starting to believe that I can go out with just two or three rods on my deck, I think I know what I am going to do.

I found some bed fish today, they were on the bank and just swam off with my bait, I didn't take a look at them, but I know that's what those bank fish were doing.  Tomorrow, I have 4 or 5 spots that I want to check, but I think I know what I will want to do.

1-26-05 Day 3 Practice-Today was kind of a "deep breath deal," I didn't get them real good, I tried to expand on a couple of areas that I had already found, but things didn't turn out as I had hoped.  I am slowing way down, the water is only 52-53 degrees, and it requires a real slow presentation.

The bite seems to pick up around mid-day and into the later part of the afternoon, very typical for early Spring, I have to be patient, and ready when the bites come, must execute.  I have one area that has a couple of spawners.  I haven't seen them, but they feel like they have some weight.  Yesterday, I pitched to a couple of spots, and each time a fish grabbed my bait and swam off slowly, they were spawners, tell-tale sign. I checked them again today, same thing, each of the fish I had bite yesterday were still there, and each did the same thing, swam off with the bait.  They're not in the livewell yet, but if they are still home tomorrow and over 12" they will be.

I have several "guts," which some folks might call ditches that are out in front of boat houses, that I feel pretty good about.  I will flip the edges and also slow roll a rattle trap through them.  I believe the fish there are staging and pretty good size.  I am looking for 3-6 bites, and if I get them, I think I will be ok.

I should note that since my Open win in December, I have signed on with several companies.  Shimano, I flew out to California to meet those folks, and it rained like crazy.  I am also now signed with Ranger, Yamaha and Motorguide.  This is all so new to me.

I am very excited about this Tour.  Win, lose or draw, I am living a dream that six months ago was just that.  That win in Louisiana has really changed things for me.  Hopefully I will have a good report for you tonight.

1-27-05 Day One, one little fish, very grateful-I have a big sense of relief at getting this first day over with.  I am not happy about how I did, but in a strange way, I feel like I got my feet wet, and I am at peace.  I caught one little "pee wee" today, and I don't think I have ever been so happy to catch a 15oz bass in my life, but by the this afternoon, I was looking for anything.  I caught my keeper late in the day, that seems to be a common thing in talking to the other guys.  I found one little stretch that I caught some non keepers on, and then, bingo, a little golden nugget, (more like a chicken Mc Nugget,) but he measured, and points are points, (AOY points.)

The spawners that I had found in pre fish were "gawners" today.  I don't know if someone found them, but I was first into the area, and they just didn't answer when I came a knockin.

Tomorrow, I am going to fish them like we do at Rayburn, (Sam Rayburn in Texas,) I am going to slow roll the edges of the off shore grass with a Rattle Trap, and cover a lot of water.  So I will chunk and whined, rip the trap out of the grass, (woh, that sounded funny,) and see what happens.  I will also throw a Carolina rig.

It does feel good to have the skunk washed off.
